Itinerary

Day by day

The return train from Aguas Calientes may leave at 2:30 p.m. or 6:30 p.m., depending on availability.

Day1

Cusco – Maras Salt Ponds – Santa María

LunchDinner

We leave Cusco early for Cruzpata, where you gear up to ride downhill toward the Maras salt ponds. This leg starts at 6:00 a.m., with views of the Andes. By about 10:00 a.m. you tour the ancient salt pools, then continue past Abra Málaga, where the scenery shifts from mountains to cloud forest.

After lunch, at about 2:30 p.m., rafting begins on the Urubamba River and ends in Santa María. You check in to your accommodation at about 5:00 p.m., and at 7:00 p.m. you have Peruvian dinner while your guide explains the next day.

Overnight: Santa María

Day2

Santa María – Cocalmayo – Santa Teresa – La Playa

BreakfastLunchDinner

After breakfast and a homemade coffee, you walk through local plantations of coffee, coca, plantain, and pineapple. Then you hike an original stretch of Inca road, different from the classic Inca Trail that linked Machu Picchu with Vilcabamba, among avocado, orange, mango, and cacao trees.

After about 4 hours you reach Quellomayu for lunch, then walk 2 more hours along the Urubamba to the Cocalmayo hot springs. Afterward you take a bus to Santa Teresa for the zip line (canopy) activity, then continue 45 minutes to the Sky Lodge Dome in Loreta, La Playa, where you take a coffee tasting tour.

Overnight: Sky Lodge Dome in La Playa

Day3

La Playa – Llactapata – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

BreakfastLunchDinner

After breakfast you walk 20 minutes to Lucmabamba (2,000 m) and take an original 15th-century Inca road. In about 3 hours you reach Llactapata, an Inca site facing Machu Picchu, where you can see the citadel and the mountain range.

You descend for about 2 hours to the Hidroeléctrica station for lunch, then take the final walk alongside the railway, passing the gardens of Mandorpampa. You arrive in Aguas Calientes at about 5:00 p.m. In the evening you have dinner with the group, and your guide gives the briefing for Machu Picchu.

Overnight: Aguas Calientes

Day4

Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

Breakfast

You have breakfast early and go up to the Machu Picchu entrance among the first visitors of the day. With a bilingual guide you tour the citadel for about 2 hours: the Main Plaza, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Towers, the Intihuatana, and the Funerary Enclosures. Then you have free time. If you booked Huayna Picchu, this is the time for it, as there is a daily limit on spots.

Afterward you go down to Aguas Calientes for a late lunch on your own or to the hot springs (not included). In the afternoon you take the train to Ollantaytambo and continue by tourist bus to Cusco.
