Why Sleep in the Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley of the Incas stretches along the Urubamba River, between Cusco and Machu Picchu. It is lower than Cusco, at around 2,800 m above sea level, so many travelers feel better with the altitude here. In addition, Ollantaytambo, at the end of the valley, is the station where the train to Aguas Calientes departs. Sleeping in Urubamba saves you transfers and places you halfway between Cusco and Machu Picchu.
