01

The Amazon, Close to Cusco

Tambopata is one of the most accessible rainforest areas in Peru. The gateway is Puerto Maldonado, a city you reach on a short flight from Cusco or Lima. From there, in a few hours you are deep in the Amazon rainforest, with rivers, lakes, primary forest and wildlife. It is a good way to end a trip through the Andes with a completely different landscape.

What You Will Experience

Sandoval Lake is a lake surrounded by rainforest where, with luck, you can see birds, monkeys and, occasionally, giant otters. Monkey Island is an island in the Madre de Dios River where several species of monkeys live. Guided hikes teach you to recognize plants, insects and tracks, and boat trips on the river are part of the daily routine.

When to Go and What to Bring

The dry season, from April to October, is the most comfortable for hiking and getting around the trails. From December to March it rains often and some paths can be muddy, although the rainforest looks very alive. The climate is warm and humid all year, so bring lightweight long-sleeved clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen, a rain jacket, a flashlight and closed-toe footwear. Check with your doctor about recommended vaccines for the Amazon before traveling.

How to Combine It with Cusco

The most practical combination is Cusco and Machu Picchu first, and then flying to Puerto Maldonado to end the trip in the rainforest, which is at low altitude. That way you go from the altitude of the Andes to the warm climate of the rainforest and rest at the end of the trip. If you have more time, look at our 15-day Amazonian Peru multi-day tour, which already includes the rainforest along with Lima, Arequipa, Titicaca and Cusco.

To organize the trip well, have on hand your dates and the day you want to fly to Puerto Maldonado: the programs begin with pickup at the airport or bus terminal. Tell us your plan and we will put together the full route.
